Parent Teacher Interviews

We encourage parents to be actively involved in their son or daughters learning.

Being familiar with the curriculum, home work and progress through the years helps to support students in their learning.

Parent Teacher interviews enable parents, students and teachers to discuss the feedback provided in the reports and to gain a more meaningful understanding of a student’s progress and opportunities for their development.

Parent Teacher interviews are organised and managed through the school’s Compass Portal and parents are notified when they can book interviews with their child’s subject teachers.

Monitoring and Reporting

The purpose of assessment at Lalor Secondary College is to support and improve student learning and performance.

Assessment at Lalor Secondary College allows teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning and teaching processes as well as to diagnose individual, class and whole school learning needs. It presents as an opportunity for both staff and students to identify strengths and weaknesses and to help teachers to follow the development of students, as well as monitor areas of their students’ learning that require improvement.

Assessment is also vital in acknowledging student achievement and evaluating student progress in relation to state wide or national standards (e.g. Victorian Curriculum).

Students and parents are provided with timely information that they can understand, interpret and use to support learning.

Years 7 to 12 – Student Reporting and Monitoring

All students will participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) at Years 7 and 9. ‘On demand testing’ (online testing) also occurs at intervals throughout the school year to track achievement and monitor progress.

In addition, each year there are four formal reports prepared for parents. In Terms One and Three interim reports are prepared which are also supported with parent teacher interview days/evenings.

At the end of Terms Two (Semester One) and Term 4 (Semester Two) comprehensive reports for every subject, are prepared for every student.

All students at Years 10-12 participate in examinations throughout the year which form an important component of their assessment. Students are provided with comprehensive revision materials and *strategies, along with support from their teachers to assist in preparing for these exams.

*Elevate Education: Throughout the year, our Later Year’s students participate in Elevate Education study skill seminars. Elevate Education is a well renowned organisation that uses the methodology of past highly successful students. They share the key skills and techniques that are proven to give students the best opportunity to achieve their learning potential. They offer highly engaging sessions with presenters that construct a practical ‘toolkit’ to support and assist students to navigate their way through assessments and exams.

At all times, parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s education. If parents do have any concerns, then individual classroom teachers can be contacted via email through the Compass link on the school website, or they can ring the school and discuss any issues with the relevant teachers or student managers if required.

If further discussions are needed, then appointments are essential. This allows for the teachers / student managers to allocate a time to sit and talk.
