Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Supporting your child during the Premiers’ Reading Challenge

From now until September 2nd, students in Years 7-10 will participate in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. By reading a minimum of 15 books and recording their efforts online, students have the opportunity to earn house points, prizes, and a certificate signed by the Premier!

Our helpful Library Staff have already labelled the spines of books from the Premiers’ Reading Challenge List with orange stickers. They will be verifying all the books read by students, so will be ready to recommend popular reads!

So how can you support your child during the Premiers’ Reading Challenge?

1. Encourage your child to choose books that interest them. This includes fiction, non-fiction, short story collections, graphic novels, and picture storybooks. Students should aim to find “just right” books: ones that are not too challenging, but are not too easy either.

2. Create a reading-friendly environment and set aside reading time every day. It is easier to focus on reading in quiet, comfortable and well-lit spaces away from distractions, and when it is part of a daily routine.

3. Be a reading role-model and discuss books together. Your child will be more motivated to read if they have your support. Check in with your child to see what they enjoy about the book they are currently reading.

5. Set manageable reading goals and celebrate their achievements. Reading goals may refer to the number of minutes spent reading or the number of pages read each day.

6. Keep it positive. Participating in this challenge should be a fun and rewarding experience. With your support and encouragement, your child can develop a lifelong love of reading.
